Dr. Maurice J. Fisher, born in Kingston, Jamaica, was awarded the prestigious Portia Simpson-Miller award from the RuJohn Foundation, a U.S. based charity, to complete his medical degree at the University of the West Indies. With the unwavering support of his community, Dr. Fisher has successfully completed his studies and is now a Medical Doctor, specializing in cardiology.
Throughout his journey, Dr. Fisher has been deeply committed to working with disadvantaged students from inner-city communities. His ability to relate to and understand the challenges they face has driven him to make a difference in their lives. Additionally, Dr. Fisher has a special place in his heart for disabled individuals, inspired by his older half-brother, who was born with congenital glaucoma and is currently blind.
Dr. Fisher’s success is a testament to the power of community support. He attributes his achievements to the generosity and encouragement of those around him. Recognizing the impact of this support, Dr. Fisher is dedicated to giving back. Upon completion of his studies, he aspires to engage in social and humanitarian causes that assist disadvantaged students with school and financial struggles. He plans to work assiduously to achieve these goals, honoring the help he received and paying it forward to future generations.

Jael Nelson is an international and first-generation college student, recently graduating from Long Island University, where she pursued a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. Born and raised in the notorious inner-city community of Denham Town in Kingston, Jamaica, she hopes to prove that her community can produce a neurosurgeon.
Determined to succeed, Jael worked tirelessly amidst the distractions of incessant crime in her community. She graduated in the top 5% of her class while actively participating in various extracurricular activities. This achievement is particularly significant as it came during the worst year of her life when she experienced several traumatic and life-changing events. However, despite these challenges, Jael realized that education was her key to escaping the violence and remained steadfast in pursuit of her goals.
Community support and charity have been crucial to Jael's success. The financial assistance and encouragement from her high school, various organizations and kindhearted individuals made it possible for her to pursue her dreams. Now, Jael is proud to announce that she has graduated with her undergraduate degree and has been accepted into a MD/PhD post baccalaureate training program in Maine. She will continue her studies and work towards becoming a neurosurgeon. Jael hopes to give back to her community and support other students in need, just as she was supported.
Omario Guscott, a driven 19-year-old from Buff Bay, Portland, is the third of seven children with a strong passion for learning and success. As a former student of Titchfield High School, Omario has set his sights on becoming an Electrical Engineer and maintaining a 4.0 GPA at Benedict College. Omario's goal to become an electrical engineer is inspired by his desire to address drainage problems in his community. He envisions developing automation and control systems for drainage infrastructure and designing sensor networks to monitor water levels and quality, helping to reduce flooding and improve efficiency.
Beyond academics, Omario is committed to helping others. His leadership and dedication to community service were evident when he helped redesign and redecorate a community park, which revitalized the area and attracted visitors through fundraisers and fairs.
Community support and charity have been pivotal in Omario's journey. They have helped to alleviate much of the burden of tuition fees and educational expenses, allowing him to focus on his studies. This support has also opened doors to valuable resources, such as workshops, research opportunities, and extracurricular activities, enriching his learning experience and enabling him to reach his full potential.
With his unwavering determination, leadership abilities, and the support of his community, Omario Guscott is poised for great success both academically and personally. Navaud Guscott, a sophomore at Benedict College studying Finance, has a strong Jamaican heritage that has shaped his values, work ethic, and commitment to community service. His upbringing was marked by a strong sense of community and a close-knit family. Growing up in Buff Bay, Portland, he faced many financial hardships, and at times did not have the resources he needed even for school. This instilled in him resilience, and despite the challenges he was able to overcome.
Navaud recognizes the impact that community support, and the help of others, has had on his journey and is dedicated to giving back whenever possible. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Navaud partnered with his church to teach math and English to children in his community. At Benedict College, he joined organizations like Brothers in Unity and volunteered at homeless shelters and high schools, inspiring others to overcome obstacles. He also serves as an officer in the Student Government Association and was selected as a Sisters of Charity of South Carolina President's Fellow, working on poverty reduction initiatives.
Navaud's long-term goal is to own and operate one of the world's largest hedge funds, aiming to create opportunities for Black and disadvantaged communities. His dream extends beyond personal ambition, focusing on representation and economic empowerment.
Community support and charity have been crucial to Navaud's success. The partial scholarship and generous donations from the Titchfield High Past Student's Sports Association have enabled him to pursue his education and maximize his potential. He continues to seek additional scholarships and financial aid which would provide more stability and allow him to focus on his studies, engage in extracurricular activities, and invest more time in community service and leadership roles.
